Daffodil Day Steam Train Carterton NZ
(Click the image for a full size one)

This is a great family fun day out riding in beautifully restored heritage carriages hauled by the iconic and immaculately presented Ja 1271 steam locomotive.

Time table

The reporting time at Carterton Railway Station is 10.30am. Allow plenty of time to find a park in the streets near the station.

At 10.40am, the Daffodil Express arrives from Wellington and unloads 550 passengers who head off to the stalls for the Daffodil Festival or board the buses provided and travel 15 minutes to "Middlerun Farm" to pick Daffodils.

Once the 550 passengers have been unloaded, the train is rapidly refilled with those eager to experience the wonder of riding on a steam train for the short journey to Masterton. The train departs Carterton 10.55am sharp for Masterton, arriving approximately 11.15am. Once at Masterton, the locomotive is turned and serviced before being reattached for the return journey to Carterton. This work will take approximately 55 minutes. The train will then depart Masterton for Carterton at approximately 12:10pm. A food vendor and possibly an ice cream van will be on hand at Masterton station for passengers. Parents often take along a favorite toy, ball or book to help keep the tiny tots amused.

The train will arrive in Carterton at the estimated time of 12.45pm. Passengers can disembark and head off to the festival and food stalls, or take a bus to the Daffodil paddocks.

From 1.30pm onwards, the wonderful and multi talented entertainers Kate and Bob will be playing a selection of their favorite tunes on the Carterton station platform. In the sealed-off car park, weather permitting, the Wairarapa Garden Railway group will have their ever popular large scale model railway layout that captivates kids of all ages. There will also be a sausage sizzle at the station during the afternoon.

The Festival stalls and town centre are just a 500 metre stroll from the Railway Station. Buses to the Daffodil paddocks can be caught from the stop on Broadway approx 400 metres from the Station. For the first timers venturing to the Daffodil fields there is some walking involved and heels are not suitable footwear for the country. Unfortunately, the short train trip to Masterton return is unsuitable for the severely disabled as the heritage carriages were never designed for wheel chairs.

The Daffodil express departs for Wellington from Carterton at 3pm.

Tickets will be available from Take Note in Carterton and Kuripuni Bookshop in Masterton.
